Rade Garage Performance Airbox & Underseat Storage
One of the things I've learned with the KTM 690 is that every modification should solve a real problem. I try to avoid adding parts just because everyone else has them. If I fit something to the bike, it needs to improve the way it rides or the way I use it. For me, the Rade Garage underseat storage kit ticked several important boxes. My biggest motivation was weight distribution. Like many 690 owners, I found the rear of the bike could feel a little nervous when carrying luggage. I wanted to move as much weight as possible away from the rear rack and place it lower and closer to the bike's centre of gravity. The underseat storage compartment gave me the perfect place to carry tools, tyre repair equipment and other heavier essentials. It doesn't sound like much, but every kilogram moved forward helps the bike feel more balanced, especially on loose gravel and technical terrain. The second reason was the intake system. The Rade Garage foam filter offers a much more direct airflow path than the standard airbox while still providing excellent filtration when properly maintained. Living and riding in South Africa means dust is always a concern, so protecting the engine is a far bigger priority for me than chasing an extra horsepower. To improve the setup even further, I fitted a Harley-Davidson Screamin' Eagle rain sock over the foam filter. It helps keep out fine dust, sheds rain and reduces the chance of the filter becoming saturated during river crossings or unexpected downpours. The only real difference I've noticed is that it softens the induction roar slightly. The bike still pulls hard, throttle response remains crisp and there is no noticeable loss of performance. After recently rebuilding the top end of my engine, I have become even more particular about filtration. Rebuilding an LC4 isn't cheap, and I would much rather spend a few extra minutes cleaning and servicing the filter than another fortune replacing valves, rings and gaskets. Looking back, I would fit the Rade Garage kit again without hesitation. For the way I ride, it delivers meaningful improvements in both handling and engine protection. Those are benefits that are worth far more than simply adding another accessory to the bike.
- ✓Moves heavier items lower and further forward, improving weight distribution.
- ✓Helps reduce the pendulum effect of luggage hanging off the rear of the bike.
- ✓More direct intake design with excellent airflow.
- ✓High quality foam filter offers excellent protection when correctly oiled.
- ✓Easy access for regular filter servicing.
- ✓Underseat storage is extremely practical for tools and repair equipment.
- ✓Works very well with a quality rain sock for dusty South African riding conditions.
- ✗The exposed intake is noticeably louder than the standard airbox.
- ✗Foam filters require more regular cleaning and oiling than paper filters.
- ✗Care must be taken to ensure the filter seals perfectly against the airbox.
- ✗The underseat storage space is useful, but not particularly large.
- ✗Riders who spend most of their time on tar may not notice the benefits as much as those riding gravel and technical terrain.
- ✗The cost can be difficult to justify. Being manufactured in Europe means South African riders pay in euros, and with a weak rand, the final landed cost including shipping and import duties is significant.
