Akrapovič KTM 690 Enduro R Exhaust
The Akrapovič exhaust is probably one of the most recognisable upgrades for the KTM 690. It's beautifully made, significantly lighter than the standard silencer and, let's be honest, it sounds fantastic. But those weren't my primary reasons for fitting it. As my 690 build evolved, I wanted every modification to complement the next. The Rade Garage intake improved airflow into the engine, while the Coober LM ensured the fuelling remained where it should be. The Akrapovič completed the package by allowing the engine to breathe more efficiently on the exhaust side. Weight was another important consideration. The standard exhaust is surprisingly heavy, and every kilogram removed from high up on the bike contributes to better handling. On a motorcycle where I had already been working to move weight forward and lower down, replacing the original silencer made perfect sense. The quality is exactly what you would expect from Akrapovič. The welds, finish and overall fit are exceptional. It looks like it belongs on the bike rather than being an aftermarket add on. The sound is deeper and more purposeful without being antisocial. It lets you know you're riding a big single, but it never becomes tiring on long days in the saddle. For me, though, this wasn't a sound upgrade. It was part of building a balanced adventure motorcycle. Every modification on my bike has a purpose, and the Akrapovič fits perfectly into that philosophy. Looking back, I have no regrets about fitting the Akrapovič. Yes, it was expensive, but it wasn't bought simply for the badge or the sound. It reduced weight, complemented the other engine modifications and completed the package I had been working towards. For me, that's what makes it money well spent. It isn't just an exhaust. It's another carefully considered piece of a motorcycle that has been built for reliability, balance and long days exploring South Africa's gravel roads.
