My Adventure Bike Toolkit Setup
Over the years I've refined my toolkit with one simple goal: carry everything I need, but nothing I don't. Every tool has been selected for function, size and weight, allowing me to deal with almost any trailside repair without carrying unnecessary bulk. The entire toolkit lives under the seat of my KTM 690 Enduro R. I use two Turkana StowCrow Pro Tool Pouches, which fit perfectly side-by-side inside the Rade Garage under-seat storage. It's probably one of my favourite pieces of luggage. The pouches are incredibly well made, keep everything organised and make it easy to find the right tool without emptying your entire toolkit onto the ground. The foundation of my toolkit is a Desert Fox bike-specific toolkit, which covers almost everything needed for routine maintenance. From there I've replaced and added a number of premium tools that either save space, reduce weight or simply work better in the real world. One of my favourite additions is the SabreCut Flex Head Mini Ratchet. It's incredibly compact, yet the flexible head makes working in awkward spaces surprisingly easy. Combined with the Klein Tools 6-in-1 flip socket, I can cover the majority of the common fastener sizes on my KTM with one tiny setup instead of carrying half a dozen individual sockets. It's a small detail, but when every gram counts, these are the kinds of upgrades that make a difference. I also carry a pair of Knipex Cobra pliers, and in my opinion they're worth every cent. They're compact enough to disappear into the toolkit but offer outstanding grip and leverage. Whether you're straightening a bent lever, gripping a rounded bolt or holding a stubborn nut, they've earned their place many times over. Tyre repairs are where I've probably learnt the biggest lessons. My toolkit includes Motion Pro BeadPro tyre irons, which double as bead breakers. They're brilliantly engineered and save carrying a separate bead breaker, but one thing I've discovered is that two tyre irons simply aren't enough when you're dealing with stiff off-road tyres like the Mitas Enduro Trail XT+ Dakar. I always carry a third tyre iron, which makes removing and refitting tyres significantly easier on the side of a trail. For punctures, I carry a compact 12V tyre inflator, a quality puncture repair kit and a spare 21-inch front tube, which can also be used in the rear wheel as an emergency solution if needed. Recovery gear is equally important. A Turkana TowRantula tow strap packs down into a surprisingly small pouch but has already proven invaluable. Hopefully you'll never need to tow or be towed, but when you do, you'll be glad it's there. I also carry a SnapJack trail stand, making wheel removal possible almost anywhere, along with a Leatherman Rebar in my tank bag. The replaceable wire cutters and robust construction make it one of the best multi-tools I've owned. Finally, a compact first aid kit completes the setup. It's something you hope never to use, but it's every bit as important as the tools themselves. The entire kit is expensive compared to buying a generic toolkit, but I've built it over time. Every item has been chosen because it solves a problem better, weighs less or packs smaller than the alternative. After thousands of kilometres of adventure riding, it's reached a point where I rarely change anything. What's in My Toolkit - Two Turkana StowCrow Pro Tool Pouches - Desert Fox motorcycle-specific toolkit - SabreCut Flex Head Mini Ratchet - Klein Tools 6-in-1 Flip Socket Set - Knipex Cobra pliers - Motion Pro BeadPro tyre irons and bead breakers - Third dedicated tyre iron - Compact 12V tyre inflator - Tube puncture repair kit - Spare 21-inch front tube - Turkana TowRantula tow strap - SnapJack trail stand - Leatherman Rebar multi-tool - Compact first aid kit I've found that a good toolkit is less about carrying more and more about carrying smarter. Every item in this setup has earned its place through experience, and together they give me the confidence to head well off the beaten track knowing I can deal with most situations on my own. For me, that's one of the best investments I've made in my adventure riding setup.
